Sewage Pumping Station

Sewage Pumping Station:

What is a Sewage Pumping Station?

A sewage pumping station is made up of a large tank (known as a wet well) that acts as the receiver for sewage from a building or a group of buildings. Sewage from individual houses flows into the wet well.

The sewage then sits in the well until it reaches a predetermined level. Once it reaches this level, a pump will kick in to pressurise the sewage so that it will travel out of the wet well, uphill, to a point where it enters the main sewer, or that it can then travel into the main sewer using gravity.

When do you need a sewage pump station?

  • When the cost of groundworks to allow sewage to flow by gravity outweighs the cost of a sewage pumping station.
  • When the sewer line passes over a ridge.
  • If basement floors are too low to allow sewage flow by gravity.
Where gravity system has not been built.

Advantages of a Sewage Pump Station

  • A pump station offers convenience when installing a sewage system, and has the potential of cutting construction costs.
  • Pump stations are fitted with remote monitoring systems, which keep operators updated.
  • Sewage is pumped automatically without any human contact, which eliminates the risk of health problems.
  • Different sizes of pumps are available for domestic applications and commercial applications.
  • The intake of the pumps is often wide to prevent blocking.
  • Sewage pumping systems are fitted with alarms to alert you to problems with the system. This minimises the risk of sewage overflowing as you are alerted quickly.

Disadvantages of a Sewage Pump Station

  • Design and installation need to be done expertly to ensure that the system is reliable and fit for purpose. This requirement for expertise means that it can be costly.
  • Although the pump systems generally don’t use much power, there is still a cost to the electricity overusing a gravity system.
  • It can be difficult to source parts for your pump. This can be avoided by taking up a maintenance contract with Pumping Solutions.
  • Fat and grease build-ups can impact reliability.
  • Although pumps are selected to minimise the risk of blockages, there is still potential for blockages to occur.

  4. Battery operated basic high-level alarm unit with 10m floatswitch and counterweight.
  5. Completely maintenance-free, transparent PVC, full-flow, non-return flap valves.
  6. Extended lugs on discharge stools and top brackets, ensure guide-rails won’t fall off, and “floating” guide-rails allow movement should minor ground changes flex the base of the tank.
  7. Light-weight, corrosion resistant, PVC guide-rails.
  8. Single guide-rail per discharge stool prevents claw from coming off (common occurrence when twin rails flex together); Top brackets can easily be affixed into a round tank access opening as the pump can be rotated initially through 180 degrees before final coupling onto discharge stool.
  9. Assembled onto fibreglass grating requiring only minimal holes for fixing assembly onto base of tank (normally 8 holes are required/drilled to accommodate 2x discharge stools, and more holes are more likely to leak).
  10. Holesaw & arbor and 2 rubber 4” inlet/duct sockets for self-drilling/self-fitting to suit site levels.
  11. 1 x 63mm ‘Plasson’/MDPE discharge pipe coupling (other options, e.g. hosetail & clip available at no extra cost).

  13. Floatswitch glanded into each pump respectively, providing automatic operation. (Use the manual change-over switch to alternate duty on a weekly basis or upon pump failure).
  14. High quality, corrosion resistant, galvanised steel, pump lifting chains.
  15. Flexible discharge hose used within tank allows movement should minor ground changes flex the base of the tank.
  16. Corrosion resistant, 4-way, float suspension hook bracket.
  17. Corrosion resistant, high quality, PVC, Slide Valve/Service Valve.
